Resolution (1987): Upper atmosphere and geomagnetic observations in low latitude regions
IUGG, noting that a useful suggestion by the Interdivisional Commission on Developing Countries of IAGA has been made for a concentrated study (at least during 1989-1990) of equatorial aeronomy and geomagnetism, greatly influenced by equatorial electrojet effects, contributing essentially to
- encouragement of low latitude countries to complement the existing research programs in the middle and high latitude regions, and
- improved understanding of coupling between the Earth's immediate environmental space and the upper atmosphere, in particular of the specific and exclusively equatorial confined phenomena
recommends member countries
- to initiate and support experiments on upper atmosphere and geomagnetism in low latitude regions at different longitudes over the world,
- to provide some cost-effective or available instruments to low latitude countries willing to participate in these global geophysical studies,
- to collaborate with the Interdivisional Commission on Developing Countries of IAGA for matters concerning the detailed plans and practical arrangements of this study.
